The Musicians’ Intent & The Audiences’ Permission – HOW do we lead others to THE PROMISED LAND of the Presence of God

Posted in Minstrel, Music, Potential Of God's Presence, Prophetic Minstrel, Teaching Series with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 14, 2016 by Jason Heilman

I’m excited to share this post on the subject of Intent and Permission as it pertains to musicians, their music and their audience.

I’ve always believed personally in what I am about to share, but was excited recently to have my views confirmed by another writer, almost as if I had written it myself.

I will get more in-depth, but to begin, I share the concept simply: The intent of the musician and their music is hugely relevant to the effect that music has upon the audience. Also, and even more important to me, is AUDIENCE UNDERSTANDING of the musicians intent IS VASTLY IMPORTANT regarding said audience GIVING PERMISSION TO THE ARTIST, allowing the audience to FULLY RECEIVE from the intent of the musician.

Let me make a statement: I’ve been frustrated in the past as a musician when my intent is not received by an audience because the audience comes in with preconceived expectations, whether conscious or subconscious.

Most of these scenarios occur in the context of me leading a church congregation. I have led worship in literally hundreds of churches over the last 15 years and this has given me a unique perspective to voice what I am sharing here. The reality is that American “church culture” does not tend to lend itself extended silence, waiting and contemplation in their worship services. I’m not writing to criticize this. I’m pointing it out as a reality in the church.

So, moving forward… I am, as a musician, drawn to lead people to places in the Holy Spirit that require time, silence, contemplation, waiting in order to RECEIVE what I, from my own experience, have enjoyed. I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE what is required to experience facets of God that cannot be experienced in 18 minutes singing straight through songs.

My journey as a musician began in tiny piano practice rooms at Christ for the Nations in Dallas, TX. I spent a year isolated in these small rooms with God. It was, what I call, my “sheep field.” I was, like David in the sheep fields, ministering to the Lord and being drawn to incredible encounters.

Ok… I’m just going to skip a lot of thoughts and get to a point here…

I have been to incredible places in the presence of God alone with Him. God has called me to re-create these type of encounters for others…

WHAT THIS REQUIRES IS TRUST… Trust from my audience TO BE LED BY ME.

MY CHALLENGE: My challenge is that I am LEADING PEOPLE TO UNFAMILIAR PLACES IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD, OFTEN WITH UNFAMILIAR SOUNDS.

Here is what I am realizing as a prophetic musician who desires to take others to the places I have been with God… IT REQUIRES THEIR TRUST IN ME… IT REQUIRES THAT THEY BE WILLING TO GO TO PLACES THEY HAVE NOT BEEN LED BEFORE.  IT REQUIRES THAT MY AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND MY INTENT AS A MUSICIAN… IT REQUIRES THAT AN AUDIENCE GIVE ME THEIR PERMISSION AND GIVE THEMSELVES PERMISSION TO GO TO THESE PLACE TOGETHER…

Unfamiliarity & Fear… These are the two things that will stop YOU AND I from going to these places in God TOGETHER.

If I try to lead you to a place in God that you have not been familiar with, FEAR COMES TO THE SURFACE… You begin to question my leadership. You begin to question my intent. You begin to wonder what I am doing, why I am using that vocal effect on my mic, why I haven’t said anything for a WHOLE 60 SECONDS.

If I led worship like a NORMAL WORSHIP LEADER, we’d both be safe… I’d get the job done and you’d never feel uncomfortable…

But here is the thing… That’s boring to me and MY CHALLENGE is… I don’t understand why YOU AREN’T BORED YET. I don’t understand why you don’t want to TRUST ME to lead you to VIABLE TRULY SPIRITUAL PLACES IN GOD THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT that I have experienced for years and years.

Listen church and musicians… I really hope this post get out there because I know many will identify with it…

BUT IF NOBODY CHALLENGES THE STATUS QUO… IF NOBODY TRYS TO ENLARGE THE PLACE OF THE TENTS… We are never going to grow. We are never going to mature more fully.

SO WHAT IS MY INTENT?

As a musician, my intent is to LEAD PEOPLE to the still waters spoken of in Psalm 23. My intent is to lead people to experience and Isaiah-like encounter with the throne room of God. My intent is to see people refreshed and healed in the presence of God under the sound and word of God.

MY INTENTIONS ARE TRUE. MY INTENTIONS ARE PURE.

I’m not going to LEAD YOU like your worship pastor does on Sunday because I AM NOT TRYING TO GO TO THE SAME PLACE HE/SHE IS GOING. You have to be willing to GIVE ME PERMISSION to lead you… Otherwise we will never go where God desires us to go TOGETHER.

THE PROMISED LAND…

As a musician, I have often felt like Joshua. Joshua went and SAW THE LAND, but when he tried to LEAD OTHERS to what he had seen, they rejected the notion of going there.

I can’t imagine living for 40 YEARS with a people who denied obtaining WHAT I KNOW IS THEIR INHERITANCE.

So friends, I am letting you in on what it’s like to be me. If you view me as arrogant, I am sorry. This is not arrogance.

I, like Joshua, HAVE SEEN A PLACE. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT WE, AS THE CHURCH, CAN GO THERE TOGETHER. But it’s going to require you to come up OUT OF THE FAMILIAR.

GOD RAISES UP FORERUNNERS to run ahead, check things out, report back, get other excited SO THAT THE TEAM CAN ADVANCE.

I don’t have 40 years to waste.

So I am asking YOU FOR PERMISSION with all the music I’ve ever led and recorded and with all the music that is to come.

I am asking you, “Will you TRUST ME?” Will you allow yourself to believe that I, and many prophetic musicians like me that God is beginning to bring out of obscurity, have been chosen by the Lord TO LEAD PEOPLE TO PLACES THEY’VE NEVER GONE BEFORE.

It requires trust. It requires patience, time, waiting… BUT THE REWARD IS WORTH IT.

PRACTICALS

I think what I have gained recently by this confirmation regarding intent and permission is to make my INTENTION MORE FULLY KNOWN and to BEGIN LITERALLY ASKING PEOPLE for their permission to lead them… Not only does this grant me their permission, it also activates in the audience to engage where I am leading.

What I am discussing here is not going to work in every situation, I understand that. I am excited about creating more venues that give the time to go to places I am talking about.

We are going to be starting a “retreat ministry” facet where we lead people musically to contemplative places in God. We are really excited about this. Some of these retreats will be for an evening, some for a day… I will be sharing about this more soon.

Redefining the term “Prophetic Worship” – Spontaneous Worship vs. Prophetic Song

Posted in Music, Potential Of God's Presence, Teaching Series on April 2, 2015 by Jason Heilman

This post is the first in a series of writings that I will be putting together…

It’s on my heart to biblically and clearly redefine some churchology that is out there in the body of Christ.

Today I am talking about “Prophetic Worship”

Let’s define these words separately…

Prophetic: Relating to the heart of God. To prophecy means to re-present the heart of God through voice or any art form in a way that encourages, exhorts and brings comfort to others.

Worship: A feeling or expression of reverence and/or adoration to God.

Ok so here is my point… How can worship be prophetic? How can our expressions of reverence and adoration to God BE PROPHETIC, MEANING, A RE-PRESENTATION OF THE HEART OF GOD.

If our expressions to God are from God, they are no longer our own and therefore NOT WORSHIP.

HERE IS WHAT I THINK PEOPLE MEAN WHEN THEY CALL WORSHIP “PROPHETIC”

SPONTANEOUS: What people have been calling Prophetic Worship for many years really should have been called SPONTANEOUS WORSHIP. Worship and Adoration that comes directly out of your inspiration regarding the nature of God in the moment and released through any form of expression immediately and spontaneously…

SO WHAT’S THE BIG FUSS JASON – WHY RE-DEFINE

1- If a person in a church sees a worship leader release a spontaneous song, they may think that worship leader has a prophetic gift that they themselves DO NOT HAVE, and therefore they may be squelched in even ever thinking they could SPONTANEOUSLY WORSHIP. We don’t want this happening.

2- We need to know the difference between SPONTANEOUS WORSHIP & PROPHETIC SONG. They are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

It’s really important to me that we don’t LUMP SPONTANEOUS WORSHIP AND PROPHETIC SONG together because what it does is DIMINISHES the release and activation of the prophetic in worship meetings and churches.

So NOW LET ME GIVE YOU SCENARIOS OF EACH  OF THESE TWO EXPRESSIONS

1- Spontaneous Worship occurs when an individual or group of people begin to release spontaneous words or phrases in the midst of a time of worship to God. This expressions comes direct from the hearts of God’s people unto Him. This is not prophetic.

2- Prophetic Song occurs when an individual singer acts as a re-presentative of the heart of God and releases a word, phrase or extended song that speaks representationally from God the Father to the people. This is NOT a time for people to sing along, it’s a time to listen and receive. Often, AFTER prophetic song occurs, people will respond with SPONTANEOUS WORSHIP. This is WHAT I DEFINE AS A CYCLE OF WORSHIP… Hearing from God, Responding to God… Divine Exchange (prayer is also involved in this exchange, and I will be writing on that in another post)

Concluding This Segment

My desire here is to make a distinction between Prophetic Song and Spontaneous Worship. We need to pull these two apart for the purpose of seeing each of these two expressions more FULLY EMERGE in the Body of Christ.

DON’T GIVE UP Between The Spirit Revelation and the Natural Manifestation

Posted in Potential Of God's Presence, Teaching Series with tags , , , on January 13, 2015 by Jason Heilman

Watch this video and then read the post.

In this video, you can see the volcano erupt and then about 12 seconds later you hear and feel the effect of the eruption. This video is a visual picture of what occurs in the realms of the spirit and our natural realm that we live in physically. Let me explain…

Your spirit is connected to the SPIRIT and this connection is in the realm of light. This connection occurs quickly. When we receive revelation in the place of prayer from the Spirit, it comes almost instantaneously. But just how REAL are the things we see in the Spirit?

Let me give you this example from my life. In April of 2014 God showed me a vision in my spirit of a coffee company that I would run that helped raise funds for ministry. In October of 2014 I held in my hand the very first bag of Kulani Coffee. NOW LISTEN, HERE IS THE WHOLE KEY OF THIS POST…

The revelation that I had in April was “the volcano erupting”… When I held the bag of coffee in my hand, that was “the shock wave of the eruption.” Are you seeing this!

The realm of sight and light is in the spirit and this revelation and realm is JUST AS REAL as the manifestation that occurs eventually in the natural – THESE REVELATIONS SIMPLY EXIST IN DIFFERENT REALMS.

THE PLACE WHERE PEOPLE GIVE UP IS BETWEEN THE REALM OF SPIRIT AND EARTH…

Now BE ENCOURAGED to HOLD ON to those things that you’ve seen in your spirit from the Spirit of God. The manifestation is coming. We often miss out on the manifestation of what we see in the Spirit because we give up during the manifestation journey…

Now in this video, the sound took 12 seconds to reach the people on the boat… Not that long, but what about when you’ve been waiting months or even years for a manifestation to reach you? Continue to hold on and believe… Ask God to re-show you in your spirit what is coming if you truly believe the original revelation was from Him.

In Daniel 10:12-14 shares one of my favorite stories in the bible. In summary, an angel appears to Daniel and explains to Daniel that God HEARD Daniel’s prayer on the FIRST DAY, BUT that it took the angel 21 days to reach Daniel (THE MANIFESTATION) because of a spiritual battle with the “prince of Persia.”

In prayer, in the spirit, in the realm of light Daniel was able to instantaneously communicate with God, but it took 3 WEEKS IN THIS CASE for Daniel to see a MANIFESTATION IN THE NATURAL.

BE ENCOURAGED TODAY THAT YOUR MANIFESTATION IS ON IT’S WAY. Stay in the place of worship and prayer and let the SPIRIT remind your spirit of WHAT IS COMING.

I LOVE YOU – Be encouraged – Everything you need is on its way…

Heilman Summer 2012 Tour In Review

Posted in Partnership, Potential Of God's Presence, Travel on October 15, 2012 by Jason Heilman

Sorry, I am just now getting to this review a month and a half after I returned. We were on the road from June-August 2012 and we ministered each and every weekend of the summer. We travelled over 8,000 miles in our little Toyota Corolla. We had some great times and we also had our share of struggles, but in the end, it was worth it all. We created many memories along the way.

I want to thank everyone who helped support us along the way, those who gave both financial and emotional support. We believe that, as a family it was something that we were called to do. After having not really travelled the past few summers, it was great to get out on the road again. I think God used us to do something unique and different in each of the places that we stopped, and we know that people were encouraged by our ministry and by the resources (books and CD’s) that we left behind. Only eternity will really tell what impact was really made upon lives throughout this summer journey.

After returning home I have been really contemplating the next phase of our lives as a family, including where the ministry side of our calling and lives is heading. I look forward to sharing some more things with you in the hopeful near future. Again, thanks for all of the support and for all of the hospitality that we graciously received over the summer of 2012. We won’t soon forget it.

Why House Concerts/Alternative Venues for Heilman Ministries in 2012… and beyond…

Posted in House Concerts, Music, Potential Of God's Presence with tags , , , , on January 9, 2012 by Jason Heilman

(Written December 10, 2011)

Last night, I went to a house concert in Dallas, TX played by a long-time friend of mine. It was incredible for a number of reasons. One, the location: I loved walking up the creaky stairs of the old building venue to apartment H. Others: I enjoyed walking in to a room full of people, sitting down on the big chair I shared with my wife, eating gluten-free cupcakes while sipping on a choice beverage as my friend released his songs and sounds over the course of the next hour and a half. I was refreshed, recreated and inspired.

One of the reasons I went was to observe; to investigate how he went about things during the entire evening. Why? Because God is speaking to me to begin doing the same thing, but in a little bit different way…

For about a decade now I’ve been traveling all over the USA, and even into some other nations, playing music at conferences, events, church meetings, etc… I’ve led for 10,000 as well as for 100. I’ve loved doing this and I will continue to do this… But there is something God is stirring in me for house concerts as well as other alternative meeting venues…

In my book, I share about a couple of times when I, my wife and our team had played in a living room, business office or similar venue. There was a dynamic in that small venue that lent itself towards a very fruitful time of refreshing, prophetic ministry. This is the kind of ministry we feel we are most called to. In fact, my latest CD “I Can’t Wear This Armor”, was recorded live in a living room with about 30 people. My favorite parts on that CD are the times when you hear the crowd of people releasing their songs… So basically, going forward, we are feeling led towards creating & ministering through venues like this on a more consistent basis.

My friend, whose house show we went to, has recently been on a 15,000 mile national house concert tour through which he’s been able to hold dozens and dozens of gatherings in only a few months time. The fact that he holds his gatherings in homes opens up a broader opportunity to release his music versus if he looked only to clubs… In a similar way, I feel led to do the same. Rather than only look to opportunities in churches, I see such vast opportunities to be able to create musical/moving/art ministry venues through alternative opportunities…

Often, I meet people (who are not necessarily in local church leadership) that love our ministry, love what we do and would desire to have us minister in their “neck of the woods.” Rather than only look for church venues to release our ministry, I believe it’s time to simply create other ways by which we can travel and do what we do through alternative venues.

Another thing I look forward to is the relational aspect of these venues. Conversely, over the course of a year, we held meetings in a local house of prayer on a monthly basis. When 20 people showed up in a room that could seat 150, it felt a little distant. Take those same 20 into a home, and you’ll have a different experience. So the Lord spoke and said, “Jason, you’re doing the right thing but you need to shift the venue.” As I sought God on what He meant, I felt impressed to no longer try to host meetings on my own at a “neutral location”, but to work with hosts who would be willing to help coordinate venues for the release of the ministry God has called us to.

That made me really excited. House concerts, and venues like it, allow me to work with a host or co-hosts that will invite and help spread the word to others. It becomes more personal. We hang out before the meeting starts, we eat & drink, I read a little excerpt from my book and then we engage into the Presence through music, dance and the arts in a unique, warm setting. That sounds really good to me! Picture yourself sitting back in your recliner, listening to a beautiful piano/strings medley while my wife dances the heart of God amidst the soft sound of a worship artist’s brush strokes on their canvas… You were made to sit back, drink a beverage, relax and release your worship sounds in an atmosphere of God’s presence like that. That’s my calling, to create that place for people and I want to do this now more than ever before.

I’m not going to quit ministering in churches or conferences. I just feel that God is emphasizing this type of venue for us and our ministry. I’m really excited about it, and I hope you are to. Right now I am booking the 2012 Potential of God’s Presence Book/Worship Tour, and I hope you’d be interested in hosting whether you are the pastor of a church of 1,000 to the owner of a living room with a couch, a few chairs and an electrical outlet.

This writing/blog was meant to be a little intro into my heart on all this, but I have more detailed info for those willing to consider hosting us. I hope to be in touch with you soon.

Examples of House Concerts & Alternative Ministry Venues via Heilman Ministries

Posted in House Concerts, Music, Potential Of God's Presence with tags , , on December 20, 2011 by Jason Heilman

I’m releasing this part of my upcoming book to give more context to some of the things that we have experienced during prophetic ministry in small, alternative venues as mentioned in yesterday’s blog post… enjoy

From Chapter 7 of The Potential of God’s Presence

Sub-Chapter: Walking In the Word

After you receive a word from the Lord, and after waiting for what can be years of standing on that word in prayer, there will come a time for a breakthrough. There will come a time when what you’ve been believing for manifests itself on the earth. It is a time of excitement and joy. It is also, oftentimes, just another beginning. Since entering the public realm of music ministry, I have ministered through music in many ways. I have played for hours in various worship and intercessory ministries. I have led corporate worship gatherings for both my home church and while traveling throughout the United States in conferences and meetings. I have taken teams to the nations and done exactly what I saw in my spirit back in school when I told others that I would have a prophetic team of artists that would travel to the nations. At this time, with all of the ministry that I, my wife and those that joined us have done, I believe we are only standing on the precipice of what the Lord is going to do.

During the summer of 2007, my wife and I led a team of musicians on a month-long tour through The Czech Republic and the UK. During this excursion, I began to notice a trend consistently occurring through our ministry. We seemed to be carrying an anointing that would produce atmospheres of rejuvenation and refreshing for others wherever we would go. I recall one such time of ministry that took place in the home of our hosts in Prague. I felt led to get the band together and we had the entire ministry leadership team from Prague sit down on couches in the living room. We then began to just play and sing over them for over an hour. It was a refreshing time for the team from Prague, and I felt so honored to be able to minister to them in that way. One of the things I thought after this was, “I wonder how often this team of leaders actually receives ministry like this.” I knew for a fact that it was not very often, if at all. I also began to feel, through that experience, that to minister in that way as musicians was something that needed to become increasingly prevalent in the entire Body of Christ, not just in our ministry.

During the summer of 2008, we again were out ministering, this time in Honolulu, HI. (No “suffering for Jesus” jokes, please.) Our team had been ministering at a mission located in the area of the city known as China Town. Over the course of that week, we had ministered to people who came in off the streets. It was a great time, and we really bonded with the team that actually ran the ministry. I was impressed by the Lord that our team needed to gather the team from the mission into the office there so that we could minister to them. This team from the mission was amazing. Many of them were formerly in similar situations to those that they ministered to. By the grace of God, they were now at a place in their lives where they could minister to others. Over the course of the week, we saw how they poured out their lives to serve these people. This team ministered there week after week, some for years, and I knew they needed a time of encouragement.

I asked the leader of the ministry if we could get everybody up to the office. When everybody was there, we began to play music and sing over them. The prophetic unction began to well up inside of me and in others on our team. We began to sing songs of encouragement over the workers. My wife began to dance around some of the women on the team and tears began to stream down their faces. We laid hands on the men and encouraged them as brothers in Christ. Many of the mission team had never experienced anything like this. Again, I felt honored to encourage such laborers in the Kingdom of God. To be honest, almost anyone can come in for a week and minister at a mission like we did. But these were the dedicated ones who poured years of their lives into the ministry. We were able to strengthen and encourage them in what they were doing for the Lord.

The foundation of the prophetic ministry is to comfort, encourage and exhort others in the word of the Lord. There are so many teams of people like the leadership team in Prague, or the mission team in Honolulu’s China Town that need encouragement along the way. I began to realize that a major part of our minstrel’s calling was to use our gifts to encourage and strengthen others in the presence and word of the Lord. I figured that if I could not stay in a geographical location to make a long-time impact, the next best thing would be to strengthen those that could and that were.

Second Corinthians 1:3–4 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” God had brought a team of prophetic minstrels into that mission to pass on the encouragement that God had placed in us to give. The cycle continued that next day when that team passed it on to those that came in for a meal. And we believe that the cycle will continue, as those men and women come from the streets of China Town to the place where they will be set free to minister to others in the way that they were ministered to.

It had been ten years since that spring night at Christ for the Nations when I first heard the calling to the minstrel’s anointing. In those years, I had ministered through music in churches, conferences and as a part of missions teams all across the United States and through the nations of the earth. But it had only been in the last few summers of mission tours that I really felt like I was tapping into the true minstrel’s calling and anointing. In that living room in Prague and that office in Honolulu’s China Town, we were able to freely flow in that calling and anointing.

I believe that in order to see the minstrel’s anointing flow, there are certain conditions that need to be in place. These conditions involve a venue for release, an informed and expectant people and an anointed minister or ministry team. When we ministered to the mission team in China Town, we had the venue of the mission office. We had a place set apart for us to be able to freely flow the way the Lord wanted to flow through us. We also had a group of people who understood how we were about to minister and had their expectations set to be ministered to in a prophetic way. We told them that we were going to play our instruments to create an atmosphere conducive to the moving of the prophetic. They sat in chairs, closed their eyes and prepared their hearts for what was coming. They received from the ministry because they expected to. And, obviously, we were the team ready to minister.

From Chapter Nine – The Ministry of the Minstrel

(From Sub-Chapter – Kingdom Connections)

As the traveling minstrels of God begin to emerge, it’s a desire of my heart to be an example of how churches and leadership can build relationships and relate to those truly called to travel from place to place as God’s “Musical Messengers.”

The purpose of these relationships is for much more than churches providing venues for musicians to hold concerts. These relationships are Kingdom relationships that advance what God is doing in churches, cities and regions. When I travel to different places, my prayer is that I may join in with the Kingdom purposes God has for that place. I’m there to serve the body of Christ to push forward into their specific destinies in God. Both my wife and I look forward to the many Kingdom connections that the Lord has in store for us!

From Chapter 8 – The Minstrel’s – God’s Atmosphere Creators

(Minstrels Are God’s Artists, Not Man’s Entertainers Part III)

The minstrel’s anointing is not just reserved for musical artists. I believe that all types of artists can function as a prophetic minstrel. Painters, sculptors, movers, dancers, singers, musicians, poets, writers, actors, film makers, graphic designers, photographers and more can all function in the anointing of the minstrel. The minstrel uses his/her artistic medium to evoke others in to the awareness of the person and presence of God. Their art is created with a purposeful intent that others, whether now or in the future, will be drawn to the nature, character and presence of the Lord as a result of their artistic expression.

I’ve just released a new pre-order campaign on a fund-raising site called Kickstarter with the goal of 100 backers before December 17. From November 1 onward I will be sharing one quote a day from the book to bring potential “pre-orderers” some more context to what this book is all about… Know that these quotes are not necessarily made to stand alone, but they represent the greater part of what the book is all about… I hope that these quotes will inspire and persuade you to take the plunge on getting your copy of The Potential of God’s Presence… Thanks

From Chapter 8 – The Minstrel’s – God’s Atmosphere Creators

(Minstrels Are God’s Artists, Not Man’s Entertainers Part II)

I believe that we are seeing God’s true purpose for the minstrel restored. In order to see this restoration, people will have to shift their mindsets from those of the entertained to those of participants. I believe that the original function of the minstrel was lost to entertainment because of people’s desire and demand to be entertained. The minstrel creates an atmosphere, but in that place, people need to take a pro-active role in listening, hearing and acting upon what is heard.

People that expect to be entertained by the true prophetic minstrels will be disappointed because that is not the minstrel’s role. The minstrel doesn’t do entertainment. The minstrel is a catalyst whose role is to spur others on to revelation and creativity as they encounter the presence of the living God.
