Reclaiming the missing pieces of Christian worship… A new blog series

missing piece

While talking with my wife regarding her dance/movement workshop MOVEMENTOLOGY, I had a picture go through my mind similar to the picture above of a puzzle with a missing piece… The missing piece represented dance for many people as it to pertains to their “worship life.” I began to share with my wife that I feel one of her major callings in life is to share the biblical foundations and importance of dance/movement in a Christians worship life…

Along with dance, I began to think about how many expressions and functions of Christian worship are missing from “corporate worship” experiences and individuals personal worship lives as well…

I think the experiences that we have had over the years of participating in and facilitating worship environments where the missing pieces of worship are encouraged and valued have led us to this point in January 2019 to begin SHOUTING, “WE HAVE GOT TO HAVE MORE OF THIS!”

Examples of Communal Worship Experiences

Communal Worship focuses on allowing for anyone present to release an expression that will edify others… One verse to support this is 1 Cor 14:26…

What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

I want to list some of our experiences with you…

Interpreting The Dance: Towards the end of one event that we hosted, we asked dancers to share what their movements had represented during the time of worship we’d just had. I remember dancers sharing what their movements meant, literally giving a corporate encouragement to those present… The dance meant so much more because those who danced literally were given opportunity to verbalize and interpret in to words what they had experienced with God while dancing… It was INCREDIBLE…

Prophesying With The Instrument: One of many examples of this occurs when my violinist friend Paula begins moving out to play her violin “over people.” She will walk through the people and play within close proximity to individuals she is led. One such person described the experience as if the “violin was singing” to her… And the Holy Spirit ministers greatly to those Paula plays her violin over… We have released other musicians  (flute, harp)

“Open Mic Worship”: I will literally make room to ask if anyone has a word, a song etc. that they feel is a CORPORATE ENCOURAGEMENT… And then I wait and I don’t rush people… This is so uncommon for most people that they hesitate out of fear or inexperience… I understand that… But though I understand this is uncommon, I continue to encourage people… AND THEN IT BEGINS… One will have a song, and I will play a 2-3 chord progression for them to sing to… Someone else will have a scripture… Someone else will have a specific word of encouragement for someone else… Another will be led to release a verbal prayer… And by the end of this “OPEN MIC” expression, I sit back and WITH JOY REALIZE THAT I JUST FACILITATED 1 CORINTHIANS 14:26 into reality…

Seeing people present become participants of communal worship like this is an incredible experience and joy for me, but for all those gathered.

These are just a few of many examples that I could share regarding seeing the Body of Christ worship in such a way where any of the expressions found in the word of God ARE IN PLAY…

WE NEED MORE COMMUNAL WORSHIP…

I simply feel God is stirring us to seek more “communal worship” experiences where more voices can be heard than the featured worship leader…

What this requires is more 1) TEACHING ON BIBLICAL WORSHIP EXPRESSIONS 2) MORE EVENTS & GATHERINGS PURPOSES TO FACILITATE AND RELEASE OTHERS IN THESE EXPRESSIONS.

I personally will be taking this challenge on by writing and teaching this year regarding the vast expanse of biblical forms of worship and work with others to HOST AND FACILIATE gatherings where we can all get on the same page regarding this and experience God TOGETHER THIS WAY…

So much more coming… Jason

What I Feel Is Missing From “Corporate Worship” & What I’m Going To Do About It In 2019…

Posted in House Concerts, Music, Prophetic, Prophetic Minstrel, Sounds From The Living Room, Uncategorized on January 8, 2019 by Jason Heilman

I want to be a part of bringing some things back to “The Christian Worship Experience” that my wife and I both have seen are missing…

I saw a vision in my mind of a puzzle with missing pieces…

The reality is, the “main stream worship experience” is often missing and lacking in expressions that we can find in the word of God.

The “corporate worship model” does not usual make room for those in attendance to release a “new song” or a “prophetic word of knowledge.”

The direction I am heading is to not speak ill of the corporate model, but to supplement the common corporate experience with ALTERNATIVE VENUES THAT LEND TOWARDS EXPANDED EXPRESSIONS AND PRACTICES IN WORSHIP… Some being spontaneous singing (the new song), the song of the Lord (prophetic word through song), word of knowledge and other gifts of the spirit, prophecy, scripture reading and prayers… Realize that I just listed 5 biblical, first-century New Testament Church practices that you won’t often find during Sunday morning services…

There is a NEED for venues and events that are purposed for these expressions to come forth…

So 2019 is going to be a progressive journey towards BRINGING PEOPLE TO THE LIVING ROOM OR BRINGING THE LIVING ROOM TO THEM… Events from homes to churches where an “open-mic policy” will be in play… Where WORSHIP LEADERS become FACILITATORS FOR WORSHIP… I’ve been doing this for years here and there but 2019 is the year where I feel I MUST NOT ONLY create venues and events but to TEACH & SHARE regarding BIBLICAL WORSHIP PRACTICES that will be lost in the next generation if we don’t pass them on… If we only focus on the corporate model of singing songs alone…

SOUNDS FROM THE LIVING ROOM will be a new theme of mine moving forward… The sounds of spontaneity and one-anothering edification rising from the CHURCH!

I’m excited to be a part and to share more moving forward… Jason

The “Modern Day Minstrel”

Posted in Minstrel on February 18, 2018 by Jason Heilman

I woke up with this phrase in my mind… “Modern Day Minstrel”

Challenge: It’s been a challenge to get MODERN DAY culture and society, in the world and church alike, to understand and recognize the need for the PROPHETIC MINSTREL in our current world…

As one who understands who a Prophetic Minstrel is and the positive things a Prophetic Minstrel brings to the table, it’s been hard to understand just WHY THAT IS…

But I think what the Lord was stirring me with this morning is that people need to see the Prophetic Minstrel IN ACTION in order to see the VALUE…

So I am asking the Lord literally NOW HOW DO WE SHOW THAT FORTH…

Our new media podcast/vlog is one way, so head over to http://www.jasonheilman.com for more of that…

I could write a book and try to educate people on the value of the Modern Day Minstrel, but most of the people who need interaction with a Minstrel won’t read the book because they don’t value enough to enough pick the book up…

IT’S TIME TO TAKE PERMISSION

A “web friend” of mine has a website called “take permission” and I love that phrase because it invokes thought that we need to believe SO MUCH in what we have been called to bring to the world that we DON’T ASK THEIR PERMISSION TO BRING IT… WE JUST TAKE PERMISSION AND BRING IT… Prophets invited themselves to dinner, and people are not used to that… But the woman who was dying picking up sticks in her front yard sure was glad the prophet invited himself to dinner…

I don’t think we can always wait for people to become educated on a subject before we BRING THEM THE VALUE… We just have to start getting out there, bringing the GOLD to the people and then watch the value for what we bring increase as it’s SEEN…

So pray for me as I TAKE PERMISSION IN 2018…

WOW… I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE TO WRITE… Thanks for letting me share this today and for those who read this far… thank you

Jason

The Musicians’ Intent & The Audiences’ Permission – HOW do we lead others to THE PROMISED LAND of the Presence of God

Posted in Minstrel, Music, Potential Of God's Presence, Prophetic Minstrel, Teaching Series with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 14, 2016 by Jason Heilman

I’m excited to share this post on the subject of Intent and Permission as it pertains to musicians, their music and their audience.

I’ve always believed personally in what I am about to share, but was excited recently to have my views confirmed by another writer, almost as if I had written it myself.

I will get more in-depth, but to begin, I share the concept simply: The intent of the musician and their music is hugely relevant to the effect that music has upon the audience. Also, and even more important to me, is AUDIENCE UNDERSTANDING of the musicians intent IS VASTLY IMPORTANT regarding said audience GIVING PERMISSION TO THE ARTIST, allowing the audience to FULLY RECEIVE from the intent of the musician.

Let me make a statement: I’ve been frustrated in the past as a musician when my intent is not received by an audience because the audience comes in with preconceived expectations, whether conscious or subconscious.

Most of these scenarios occur in the context of me leading a church congregation. I have led worship in literally hundreds of churches over the last 15 years and this has given me a unique perspective to voice what I am sharing here. The reality is that American “church culture” does not tend to lend itself extended silence, waiting and contemplation in their worship services. I’m not writing to criticize this. I’m pointing it out as a reality in the church.

So, moving forward… I am, as a musician, drawn to lead people to places in the Holy Spirit that require time, silence, contemplation, waiting in order to RECEIVE what I, from my own experience, have enjoyed. I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE what is required to experience facets of God that cannot be experienced in 18 minutes singing straight through songs.

My journey as a musician began in tiny piano practice rooms at Christ for the Nations in Dallas, TX. I spent a year isolated in these small rooms with God. It was, what I call, my “sheep field.” I was, like David in the sheep fields, ministering to the Lord and being drawn to incredible encounters.

Ok… I’m just going to skip a lot of thoughts and get to a point here…

I have been to incredible places in the presence of God alone with Him. God has called me to re-create these type of encounters for others…

WHAT THIS REQUIRES IS TRUST… Trust from my audience TO BE LED BY ME.

MY CHALLENGE: My challenge is that I am LEADING PEOPLE TO UNFAMILIAR PLACES IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD, OFTEN WITH UNFAMILIAR SOUNDS.

Here is what I am realizing as a prophetic musician who desires to take others to the places I have been with God… IT REQUIRES THEIR TRUST IN ME… IT REQUIRES THAT THEY BE WILLING TO GO TO PLACES THEY HAVE NOT BEEN LED BEFORE.  IT REQUIRES THAT MY AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND MY INTENT AS A MUSICIAN… IT REQUIRES THAT AN AUDIENCE GIVE ME THEIR PERMISSION AND GIVE THEMSELVES PERMISSION TO GO TO THESE PLACE TOGETHER…

Unfamiliarity & Fear… These are the two things that will stop YOU AND I from going to these places in God TOGETHER.

If I try to lead you to a place in God that you have not been familiar with, FEAR COMES TO THE SURFACE… You begin to question my leadership. You begin to question my intent. You begin to wonder what I am doing, why I am using that vocal effect on my mic, why I haven’t said anything for a WHOLE 60 SECONDS.

If I led worship like a NORMAL WORSHIP LEADER, we’d both be safe… I’d get the job done and you’d never feel uncomfortable…

But here is the thing… That’s boring to me and MY CHALLENGE is… I don’t understand why YOU AREN’T BORED YET. I don’t understand why you don’t want to TRUST ME to lead you to VIABLE TRULY SPIRITUAL PLACES IN GOD THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT that I have experienced for years and years.

Listen church and musicians… I really hope this post get out there because I know many will identify with it…

BUT IF NOBODY CHALLENGES THE STATUS QUO… IF NOBODY TRYS TO ENLARGE THE PLACE OF THE TENTS… We are never going to grow. We are never going to mature more fully.

SO WHAT IS MY INTENT?

As a musician, my intent is to LEAD PEOPLE to the still waters spoken of in Psalm 23. My intent is to lead people to experience and Isaiah-like encounter with the throne room of God. My intent is to see people refreshed and healed in the presence of God under the sound and word of God.

MY INTENTIONS ARE TRUE. MY INTENTIONS ARE PURE.

I’m not going to LEAD YOU like your worship pastor does on Sunday because I AM NOT TRYING TO GO TO THE SAME PLACE HE/SHE IS GOING. You have to be willing to GIVE ME PERMISSION to lead you… Otherwise we will never go where God desires us to go TOGETHER.

THE PROMISED LAND…

As a musician, I have often felt like Joshua. Joshua went and SAW THE LAND, but when he tried to LEAD OTHERS to what he had seen, they rejected the notion of going there.

I can’t imagine living for 40 YEARS with a people who denied obtaining WHAT I KNOW IS THEIR INHERITANCE.

So friends, I am letting you in on what it’s like to be me. If you view me as arrogant, I am sorry. This is not arrogance.

I, like Joshua, HAVE SEEN A PLACE. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT WE, AS THE CHURCH, CAN GO THERE TOGETHER. But it’s going to require you to come up OUT OF THE FAMILIAR.

GOD RAISES UP FORERUNNERS to run ahead, check things out, report back, get other excited SO THAT THE TEAM CAN ADVANCE.

I don’t have 40 years to waste.

So I am asking YOU FOR PERMISSION with all the music I’ve ever led and recorded and with all the music that is to come.

I am asking you, “Will you TRUST ME?” Will you allow yourself to believe that I, and many prophetic musicians like me that God is beginning to bring out of obscurity, have been chosen by the Lord TO LEAD PEOPLE TO PLACES THEY’VE NEVER GONE BEFORE.

It requires trust. It requires patience, time, waiting… BUT THE REWARD IS WORTH IT.

PRACTICALS

I think what I have gained recently by this confirmation regarding intent and permission is to make my INTENTION MORE FULLY KNOWN and to BEGIN LITERALLY ASKING PEOPLE for their permission to lead them… Not only does this grant me their permission, it also activates in the audience to engage where I am leading.

What I am discussing here is not going to work in every situation, I understand that. I am excited about creating more venues that give the time to go to places I am talking about.

We are going to be starting a “retreat ministry” facet where we lead people musically to contemplative places in God. We are really excited about this. Some of these retreats will be for an evening, some for a day… I will be sharing about this more soon.
