Reclaiming the missing pieces of Christian worship… A new blog series

missing piece

While talking with my wife regarding her dance/movement workshop MOVEMENTOLOGY, I had a picture go through my mind similar to the picture above of a puzzle with a missing piece… The missing piece represented dance for many people as it to pertains to their “worship life.” I began to share with my wife that I feel one of her major callings in life is to share the biblical foundations and importance of dance/movement in a Christians worship life…

Along with dance, I began to think about how many expressions and functions of Christian worship are missing from “corporate worship” experiences and individuals personal worship lives as well…

I think the experiences that we have had over the years of participating in and facilitating worship environments where the missing pieces of worship are encouraged and valued have led us to this point in January 2019 to begin SHOUTING, “WE HAVE GOT TO HAVE MORE OF THIS!”

Examples of Communal Worship Experiences

Communal Worship focuses on allowing for anyone present to release an expression that will edify others… One verse to support this is 1 Cor 14:26…

What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

I want to list some of our experiences with you…

Interpreting The Dance: Towards the end of one event that we hosted, we asked dancers to share what their movements had represented during the time of worship we’d just had. I remember dancers sharing what their movements meant, literally giving a corporate encouragement to those present… The dance meant so much more because those who danced literally were given opportunity to verbalize and interpret in to words what they had experienced with God while dancing… It was INCREDIBLE…

Prophesying With The Instrument: One of many examples of this occurs when my violinist friend Paula begins moving out to play her violin “over people.” She will walk through the people and play within close proximity to individuals she is led. One such person described the experience as if the “violin was singing” to her… And the Holy Spirit ministers greatly to those Paula plays her violin over… We have released other musicians  (flute, harp)

“Open Mic Worship”: I will literally make room to ask if anyone has a word, a song etc. that they feel is a CORPORATE ENCOURAGEMENT… And then I wait and I don’t rush people… This is so uncommon for most people that they hesitate out of fear or inexperience… I understand that… But though I understand this is uncommon, I continue to encourage people… AND THEN IT BEGINS… One will have a song, and I will play a 2-3 chord progression for them to sing to… Someone else will have a scripture… Someone else will have a specific word of encouragement for someone else… Another will be led to release a verbal prayer… And by the end of this “OPEN MIC” expression, I sit back and WITH JOY REALIZE THAT I JUST FACILITATED 1 CORINTHIANS 14:26 into reality…

Seeing people present become participants of communal worship like this is an incredible experience and joy for me, but for all those gathered.

These are just a few of many examples that I could share regarding seeing the Body of Christ worship in such a way where any of the expressions found in the word of God ARE IN PLAY…

WE NEED MORE COMMUNAL WORSHIP…

I simply feel God is stirring us to seek more “communal worship” experiences where more voices can be heard than the featured worship leader…

What this requires is more 1) TEACHING ON BIBLICAL WORSHIP EXPRESSIONS 2) MORE EVENTS & GATHERINGS PURPOSES TO FACILITATE AND RELEASE OTHERS IN THESE EXPRESSIONS.

I personally will be taking this challenge on by writing and teaching this year regarding the vast expanse of biblical forms of worship and work with others to HOST AND FACILIATE gatherings where we can all get on the same page regarding this and experience God TOGETHER THIS WAY…

So much more coming… Jason
